White Night – this Saturday

When I first heard about White Knight, all sorts of images flashed through my head, fortunately, they all turned out to be very wrong and it’s actually a festival (led by Brighton & Hove Arts Commission working in partnership with Brighton & Hove City Council) to make the most of the ‘extra hour’ we get with the clocks going back.

This is the second year for the festival and they have a packed and eclectic line up to keep us entertained throughout the night. The programme includes user generated videos, art installations, late night sports and a (very) wide range of live music.

My recommendation this year is the BANG collaborative project - Future Machine. BANG (the Brighton Animators Networking Group) Members have been creating animations about the Future that will be projected onto the Unitarian Church in New Road. You’ll get the chance to see lots of amazing animations projected onto one of Brighton’s most unique buildings while having a pint at one of the pubs on the opposite side of the road.

The animations will be shown from 7 – 10.30 pm then again between 12 and 2 am this Saturday. The BANG Future Machine was put together by the hard work of Sarah Bird, Kate Genevieve and other members of BANG.

Hope to see you there,

Luke

An Interns Point of View, Part 2 - Matthew Moore @ Qube

We have invited 3 of the interns from the Sussex Internship Programme to be guest bloggers about their experiences throughout the 30 days of their internships

Hello again. Matthew from Qube here. As you may recall in my last post I hadn't had much time here, two and half days to be specific. However now I'm in my fourth week I hope to give a little more insight into the wonderful world of Qube.

Last week I went a stage further from community mapping onto consumer outreach on a current project Qube are handling. A competition is being run to coincide with the launch of the new Connexions website which was developed by and is now being promoted by Qube. It's a local competition seeking out young artists and designers called Mydentity. The winners will have a chance to work with a professional illustrator and one lucky person's design will be applied to the new Connexions website. My job has been to seek out potential entrants online and raise awareness of the contest. Now via this blog my readers are aware, bask in the power of social media! Working here has made me fully realise social media's potential - talking to young people around Sussex and hearing their enthusiasm has been an enlightening experience. Creating a dialogue is far more encouraging than bombarding people with information. One thing I know that Qube will teach me is how to use social media tools creatively.

As you probably know from David's blog post we had two days of intern training. I won't detail the program as he already has, but I will repeat that it was great to meet everyone else on the program. I must also commend Wired Sussex for choosing Bill's for the catering as the food was fantastic (especially the brownies). All in all the four presentations were better than expected and taught me a lot as my Psychology degree contained little in the way of business skills.

Finally I'll talk about the end of last week, where I was very lucky to get a last minute invite to the Brighton and Hove Business Awards (or BAHBAs). I may not have flexed my networking skills as much as I should have, but it was great to see the vibrancy of Brighton's business community all packed into one room. Unfortunately Qube didn't win, but it didn't damper our fun. I retain most of my memories of the night, though I don't think everyone else can say the same!

I'll leave it at that for now. Expect to hear from me in a few weeks for more tales from the social media world.

An Interns Point of View, Part 2 - David Howard @ Eurogamer

We have invited 3 of the interns from the Sussex Internship Programme to be guest bloggers about their experiences throughout the 30 days of their internships.

David Howard @ Eurogamer

Well it's that time again I suppose. Another exciting insight into an edited version of my world and my activities on my Internship. Last week I tried to inform you all as best I could about my then brief time at Eurogamer and how I was finding it. Today however, is a different matter. A vast variety of different occurrences have, well, occurred. To both tease your appetite and also ensure that I don't misplace a thought and forget something, expect to read about some of the projects I've been working on, the guys at Eurogamer, the training days for Wired Sussex, drinking with Wired Sussex and meeting the fantastic group of interns.

Okay, so let's begin with some of the tasks that I've been working on. My main, long running project is coming along nicely and entering the final stages of it's development now. So far I'm suitably pleased with it and hope that the final output looks as good as I expect it to in my head. There will be a lot of rendering involved when it's outputted however, so it may be a while yet. Other than that, I've been working on several takeover pieces (which are the backgrounds for the site), with my first one going live last week and my second skin has since gone live over at VG247. Several others have either been completed or are just awaiting feedback and should go live over the coming weeks.

I sat in on my first tech meeting last Monday, lead by Lead Developer Mark, which was filled with a lot of developer jargon which I managed to follow most of. Aside from work related tasks, a portion of my time has been well spent at defeating the vast majority of staff at FIFA 10. Whether it's against mentor Martin with his obsession with hacking my players down in the box, against Editor Tom with his hilarious self-commentary, or against Managing Director Rupert and his cool and calm approach, it's always a great laugh; and if it's not sheparding a virtual leather ball around, it's singing famous movie tunes using just the name of that film. Now I'm sure that doesn't sound fantastic, but just try singing the tune of Star Wars using just the words 'star wars'. Also, having just put the finishing touches to the in-house Eurogamer Tournament that I've organised will surely see more cheers and tears as the staff battle it out to become King of the Office.

There were two training days put on by Wired Sussex last week for all of us interns. Over the two days we sat through talks on Presentation Skills, Networking, Project Management and Writing Skills. With a varied approach to all of the presentations, with the inclusion of a game of Family Fortunes, it was a beneficial day in terms of knowledge and better than I was anticipating. The best thing about the two days was certainly meeting, for the first time, Nick in person and all of the other Interns. Meeting a variety of people from multiple backgrounds but all in the same situation felt like the first few days of University again and I personally love meeting new people and 'networking'. After the success and enjoyment of the trip to the Black Lion, we have arranged another one off our own backs for this Friday.

I'll call this a day for now, although expect to here from me again shortly as I 'think' I'll have some awesome news to pass on.
