Looking Good!

Those of you that know me in real life may be aware that I love photography, so I was super pleased to be able to get Garage Studios to cover our recent skills fair and design night.

In addition to Adam providing the great shots we have used on our blog, the team also bought along their pop up studio. Check out their blog and see if you can spot yourself.

Big thanks from all at Wired Sussex to Adam, Tash, Mary, Leon and Rupert

Glug

At Wired Sussex we’ve been talking for a while about the lack of events for designers. It seems that the calendar is full of techie stuff (there seems to be a group for every programming language) and events such as Write Club show that writers can be sociable too. Friday night though saw the first Brighton Glug event and it was well worth waiting for!

It had sold out well in advance and the additional tickets that were released also sold out almost instantly. The venue (The Basement, in 24 Kensington Street) was perfect for people to chat and be creative. The walls were lined with canvases and people were covering them with some great pieces. There were also animations screenings and DJs.

There were five talks throughout the night covering all aspects of design and showcasing some real cutting edge work. I enjoyed catching up with a lot of creative types who I’d not seen for a while and meeting lots if new people too. The night was billed as ‘Not working not Networking’ and this was evident with a really relaxed atmosphere (helped no doubt by a reasonably priced bar!).

So thanks to Crush, Agency Rush and everyone else involved in making the night such a success. I’m already looking forward to the next one...

...before that though, if you’ve got an interest in all things creative then why not head along to tonight’s Create Brighton drinks at The Victory? The group are meeting for the first time to chat about what should be done to create a network for designers in Brighton. As Adam Kemeny, the event organiser says: “Create Brighton is just an idea at the moment. I think that it should be a place online for Brighton's creative community to get together to share work, get feedback from peers, showcase home-grown talent to the wider world and be a central point to find other, related activities that are happening locally and beyond”.

I hope this signals an increase in local events for designers and gives people a platform to show off the huge amount of design talent that there is in Brighton and the surrounding areas.

Did you 'Make it into Media'?

With the adrenalin of Thursday's event finally ebbing away, we've now had a chance to reflect on what was a great day.

Make it into Media saw over 500 media hopefuls take full advantage of the skills, training experience and knowledge on hand, and gain insight into this competitive field. The day started with talks on The Sussex Internship Programme and the opportunities available through the University of Sussex' Careers and Employability Centre, as well as an award presentation. Phil Jones and Judith Good of the University of Sussex were pleased to present Tim Vincent with his award for best Student on the Postgraduate Certificate in e-Learning design.

The panel sessions were really well attended with talks on the best routes into Mobile Development, Video Production, PR, Web Development, TV, Journalism, SEO, Games, e-Learning and Animation. What was great to see was the amount of questions fired at the panellists, those in attendance were really keen to drill down on the skills needed to break into their chosen field. Some of the panellists were kept busy for an hour after their presentation. There was no let up for the advisers and experts from the academic institutions, training companies and agencies who were kept busy all day fielding questions and providing advice.

Make it into Media was a collaboration with the University of Sussex and we would like to thank all of our partners
who helped make the event such a success and a very special thanks to everyone who helped on the day. We even got our photo taken with the Mayor, which will make my mum very proud!

I would love to hear your feed back, what worked well for you? What can we do differently next time? With your help we can make the next event even better.
