For the eighth instalment of our guest blog month Emily talks about how valuable her marketing internship placement turned out to be.
When I started my year-in-industry internship at Epic in Brighton, I didn’t know what to expect as I had never had an office job, worked in marketing nor know anyone that did! However, after a few hours in my new role, I could tell it was going to be a positive experience…
I was immediately welcomed into the Sales and Marketing team, shown how to use various tools, where to find folders relevant to me and given my first tasks.
Since commencing my placement in September 2010, I have gained more and more responsibilities during my time here. I have taken on numerous projects including: Search Engine Optimization (SEO), Social Media administration, Mobile App Marketing, and many more, amongst other day-to-day tasks.
Prior to starting at Epic, my expectations were that most company’s only hired undergraduate students to do all the tedious jobs that nobody else wants to do! However, at Epic I instantly felt as though I was part of the team, which I still believe after 6 months of being at the company.
Just the other day I was making drinks for everyone (voluntarily, I may add!) and somebody asked for a coffee. I never normally make proper coffee (as I detest it!) and so I had to ask somebody in the kitchen to help me make it! They thought it was hilarious that the intern hadn’t made coffee at all after 6 months of being here!
Epic’s main strength, in my eyes, is the workforce’s positive attitude, sense of togetherness and enjoyment of what they do. I believe it is very important that staff feel happy at work, not only for the individuals but also the company as a whole - meaning that the employees are carrying out their jobs well.
I think an internship is the perfect way to prepare you and help you secure full-time work when you finish your degree, as well as obtaining many more skills, training and confidence.
It also helps you to start thinking about the career path you may like to take (or rule it out altogether!).
In my case, it has strengthened my initial feeling that I wanted to go into marketing. At this time I am deciding what pathway option to take for my final year of study at Bournemouth University.
I can honestly say that my experience has been and continues to be a pleasure to undertake and I would recommend an internship at Epic to anybody who wants to learn a lot, work hard (and have some fun) in their placement year.
Heather Wilkinson, Marketing Manager at Epic commented:
“WiredSussex is very much the go-to place for creative jobs in Sussex, and it’s worked really well for us in terms of attracting both interns and permanent members of staff.”
